A marine sustainability project in the Bay of Biscay, led by the Basque Government with the participation of the whole of society.
The oceans, which account for 70% of the earth’s surface, are having to deal with pressures from human activities such as over-fishing, acidification and marine litter, mainly plastic. Predominantly coming from the land (78%), this litter is carried to the sea by small river systems and is negatively impacting on the environment, the economy and health. Collecting data by using cameras and sensors, along with actions such as marine literacy, is vital to protect ocean resources and drive sustainability.,
Ulysses Data for Science studies marine litter in Basque rivers and in the Bay of Biscay, investigating its origin, movement and accumulation to design mitigation measures, while also promoting environmental education and the circular economy with a view to establishing a global strategy against marine litter.
